My mom and dad have been gone for several years now but, whenever I read a book or see a graphic like this one, I think of their words to my brother and me as we were growing up: “Same thinking = same results!” My dad said I was just “stubborn”…which probably does have a lot to do with not changing my thinking. But, as an adult, entrepreneur, life and leadership coach, I know there are many reasons for me to be afraid of changing my thoughts (read my blogs on alibis!). And that is not necessarily a good thing!
As I work as a participant in a global MasterMind Group every Saturday morning, we are spending a lot of time talking about our thinking and our belief systems. We are learning that our thinking - negative or positive - shape our business success and life in every possible way. So how do we successfully change our thinking?
John Maxwell, in his little book, Jump Start Your Thinking, offers 4 thoughts and steps to consider the why and how to change our thinking.
Changing our thinking changes our beliefs. We are what and who we think we are. So why not believe that we are a person of value and have purpose and potential to do amazing things in work, relationships and life?
Changing our beliefs changes expectations. “The first and most important step toward success is the expectation that we can succeed.” ~ Nelson Boswell
Changing our expectations changes our attitude. Negative expectations are the fastest route to dead-end thinking. So….why would we want positive expectations? Attitude can be our best or worst enemy because.
Changing our attitude changes behavior. And that changes everything!
So, if you think you need to get rid of “stinking thinking” to get where you are wanting to go remember this simple formula: Changed beliefs = New Expectations = Positive Attitude = Changed behavior!
