Have you ever felt like you are doing the same things day after day? Wake up the same time, get dressed, maybe eat some breakfast, head to work, come home, eat dinner, watch TV and go to bed just to start everything again the next morning? You might be like a circus pony!
I was one of those little kids a little fearful of the clowns that seemed to keep coming out of those little circus cars, but I always loved the ponies and horses! They were so pretty and knew exactly what they were supposed to do. It even got better because I knew my parents would give me the money to ride one of the ponies in the kids’ area after the circus.
I would get lifted onto the pony and we would go around and around about 10 times and then it would be over. It wasn’t until I was reading the book, Awaken, by Priscilla Shirer that I even thought about what life was like when those ponies could no longer be in the circus.
They would be moved to a farm or ranch with beautiful hills and green grass and be released to live the rest of their life. But, you know what their reality was? They would stay in a pretty confined area and just walk in circles….just like they did every day they were working. How sad is that? But, how many people have you met who just couldn’t do retirement very well? They were bored and just found themselves doing a similar routine to when they were working. As a coach, I can say with confidence: A lot of people are circus ponies.
So how do you get out of the rut of walking in circles? Here are three quick suggestions:
Throughout your life, find what people or causes you are passionate about. – you know, those things that make your heart beat a little faster. Something you can do where time just flies. Those things you hear others talking about and your ears gravitate to their conversation.
Discover your strengths. What are you good at doing? Those are the things we want to use as we live life with passion.
Know your purpose in every season of life! We were not born to be circus ponies walking in circles our whole lives.
As a coach, I love to see men and women live life with passion and purpose. Are you one of those people or are you a circus pony needing some help exploring the rest of the landscape around you? Call me if your need help discovering your passion and purpose in this season of life.
